Tackling child labour in gold mines
A coalition of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and companies have launched a project to tackle child labour in Ugandan gold mines. The NGOs are Solidaridad, Stop Kinderarbeid, UNICEF, and Fairtrade; the companies are Philips and Fairphone, which are seen as frontrunners in making the electronics industry more sustainable.
The approach focuses on preventing and reducing child labour. Another aim is to enable local communities to benefit more from gold mining, for example by making mining more efficient. The aim is also to transform the trading chain with a view to ensuring that small mines gain – and retain – better access to the world market.
