First yearly progress report IRBC Agreement Renewable Energy Sector
How sustainable is the renewable energy sector? You might think that in itself it is a green sector, but sustainability is not just about producing energy without CO2 emissions, but also about the quality of the supply processes in value chains. There lies a major challenge. Many of the raw materials for wind turbines and solar panels come from countries where human rights, the environment and biodiversity are under threat. The renewable energy sector, however, is determined to be part of the solution here too.

A little over a year ago, The International Responsible Business Conduct Agreement for the Renewable Energy Sector (IRBC REA) was launched to address and prevent risks of human rights abuses and environmental damage in value chains. Today a total of 53 companies, industry associations, governments, knowledge institutions and NGOs are working together to achieve this and set responsible business conduct as a firm standard in the sector. Because it is only together that we can achieve sustainable change.
What has been developed to support the parties and what has so far been accomplished through the Agreement is published in our first yearly progress report. We are now full steam ahead in year two, aiming a.o. to further increase insight in and improving due diligence practices of our participating renewable energy companies.
